Always within. It was more like there was a steel rim around the interior of his skull and someone, everyone, was trying to twist the screws that would make the mechanical rim expand from inside his head, cracking the bone to bits until it made its way out, destroying his head.

I haven’t really settled on a single headcanon for who/what Ples is or how he ties in with the story, so I guess I might as well share some of my various thoughts about him here.

(it’s keeping me awake at night, I must write them down)

1. Ples is the physical incarnation of the Roman god Janus. (see previous posts about this one)
2. Ples a construct/clockwork-cyborg, which is why he has extended knowledge on them and immediately assumes {…} is one as well. His assumption that {…} was a failed project is purely projection, as he himself was a failed experiment, tossed aside (his being unhinged can be either the cause or a symptom of this rejection).
3. Good!Ples was always human; Bad!Ples is his creation made in his likeness. The conversation heard between the two isn’t actually the same person, but the two of them arguing as Ples’ clone-creation has taken him hostage in an attempt to take over his life.
4. Ples mechanically enhanced himself, either as part of an experiment or to reconstruct himself partially after a chemical explosion.(we see him as a 24-year-old in one of Tessa’s sketches, which proves that he does age like a human)
5. The oil in his wound isn’t from his body, but came from his hands, possibly from handling the various chemicals needed to make the tonic.
6. Ples really is the Hanna-verse equivalent of Dr. Jekyll, and the tonic he was working on was the first one that actually succeeded in bring out his ‘Hyde’. In accordance with the story, Ples seeks to help an old friend gone mad (Tessa keeps mentioning that Ples’ pocke-twatch was given to him by a friend and it seems to have great sentimental value to him).
7. Ples’ ticking noises really DO come from his pocket-watch. The reason it seems so loud/is a very heavily visual part of his design is because it’s a visual metaphor for something constantly weighting him down and following him wherever he goes. The pocket-watch is an important part of Ples, because it represents his deepest regrets. (possibly in regards to the friend who gave it to him, who he probably lost (maybe killed by Bad!Ples) You’ll notice there’s no ticking in any of Tessa’s sketches in which the main cast interacts with him, suggesting (along with the chapter title ‘In Which a Clock Stops Ticking’) that his character development involves having to let go of the guilt/regret that follows him wherever he goes.
8. Bad!Ples is only really ‘bad’ whenever Good!Ples has had a rough day, because his dark side represents all his repressed negative emotions that he was brought up to not show. On a good night Bad!Ples is just as likely to be helpful and constructive, shown in Lee’s flashback, where Bad!Ples acts as the voice of reason. (and yes, that IS Bad!Ples in the bar-scene, all the visual cues are there)
9. (not directly about Ples) Hanna didn’t get upset because Ples was insulting {…}, he was upset because Ples’ words hit a little too close to home. He was referring to someone being a failed experiment  stitched together miserably and then tossed away. Guess who is stapled together rather miserably and is continuously referred to as a hollow shell of a boy, who smells dead. Maybe that’s not simply ‘magic taint’…
10. More commonly accepted, Ples is the inverse!Jekyll (in keeping with the wacky Hanna-verse) in that he was always two personalities and he was working on that tonic to try and unify them or repress the Other side, aka ‘change the pattern’. 
11. Bad!Ples wasn’t going to shoot anybody…
12. a)… he was aiming at a particular clockwork-mechanism, effectively stopping whatever function it was symbolically responsible for.
13. b)… he shot himself, symbolically freeing himself, by ‘shooting his other half’, á la Therese/Jeanette Voerman from Vampire the Masquerade.
14. c)… he really just wanted to see if his antique gun, that he bought recently, actually worked (lol)…
15. 12:21 is a Biblical reference (Romans 12:21) - “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (headcanon not mine, but I find it interesting) I don’t see this making much sense coming from Bad!Ples or how it could possibly tie in with a time of day, but it’s still suspiciously Jekyll/Hyde-ish.
16. 12:21 referring to the end of all that is good; Bad!Ples is using a subtle End of Mayan Calendar (12/21/2012) to refer to the ‘end of all that is good’, aka his good side. Basically he is saying that his good side has died…
17. Nothing Bad!Ples says carries any relevance, he’s just screwing with them to amuse himself, as he will be inclined to do after ‘being cooped up for so long’. Bad!Ples is a nosy antagonizer because, unlike his reclusive counterpart, he is VERY under-stimulated and simply misses some adventure.

I am not going to accept any new threads on Ples for a while due to reasons. I’ll probably finish up some writing that I need to get done, and there’s the queue, but that’ll be it.
